Stan Lester with Mirage 2700 no 220, Indalo, wrote to me giving this ingenious method of stopping fuel coming out through the tank vent. I reproduce the details he provided.
The problem was that filling Indalo’s fuel tank frequently resulted in diesel being ejected through the vent pipe - not much in quantity, but enough to cause an embarrassing slick if we forget to muffle the outlet with a cloth. In theory the solution is to put a loop in the vent pipe to take it higher than the outlet, which is difficult on the 2700 because the outlet is only a couple of inches below the top of the coaming. To get around this, I fitted a ‘trap’ - an old screw-top tin can to the base of which was soldered a copper pipe - to the outlet, via a ‘Y’ piece hose connector, with the other arm of the Y taking the vent pipe from the tank. (see the attached diagram). Any diesel coming up the pipe from the tank now goes into the can, from where it can be drained off into a jar and disposed of along with the next lot of used engine oil. The same should apply to any water entering via the outlet.
