John Griffin has sent the following useful information on the Snapdragon 27 and Yanmar YSEB & YSE12 engine servicing.
Regarding the engines John draws our attention to the manual, which states that the inside of the crankcase, the lube oil filter plates and the breather valve should be cleaned out every 100 hours. We feel that technology has moved on since the manual was produced and with modern oils this will not need to be done as often as recommended. I recall being told that at one time black gunge literally had to be shoveled out of the crank cases of large fishing boat engines, but no more.
However, if cleaning has not been undertaken recently, there may be a build up remaining from previous years and it is worth checking, particularly as the rear cylinder cover has to be removed which was easy with the old hand start engines but now, John points out, the cover is behind the starter motor, which has to be removed first and in turn, to extract the bevel drive of the motor, the alternator has to be removed. I reproduce the relevant parts of the manual.
Clean the breather valve. The breather valve is attached to the inside of the rear cylinder cover.
Remove the breather valve assembly from the cover and without stripping, wash it thoroughly in light oil.
Drain off the lube oil from inside the crank case and wash the interior with light oil. Then fill with lube oil.
(This should be performed after the first 50 hours of operation in the case of a new engine.)
Drain off the old lube oil after first running the engine until it is warm.
The drain plug is located below the rear cylinder cover.
